The organization of the kinus workshops falls to Rabbi Simcha Backman, a shaliach in Glendale, CA (“north of Hollywood,” he clarifies for clueless East Coasters). He works with a staff of thirty volunteers and some 300 presenters, beginning six months in advance. “There are a hundred workshops, and the topics change every year,” he says. “We’re always trying to stay in tune with the challenges of our shluchim and keep it meaningful for them. This is a conference for shluchim, by shluchim.
“Obviously, our shluchim have very different needs depending on where they live. Doing outreach in Hollywood is different than doing outreach in Manhattan or Nebraska or Hong Kong. But in our larger sessions, which are led by veteran shluchim, we emphasize keeping clear on our mandate, which is bringing people closer to Torah and transforming their lives.”
Rabbi Backman says that the recession has made fundraising tougher across the board, so that many shluchim today are concerned with strategies for staying afloat financially (after the first year of shlichus, Chabad shluchim generally raise their own funds). They’re interested in learning both how to bring in money more effectively and how to run programs for less money. “If you put the ruchnius aside, running a Chabad house is a business,” Rabbi Backman says. “A shaliach needs to know how to manage the money, the employees, and the ‘clients.’” (One veteran shaliach commented wryly, “When I see all the shluchim dancing together at the Banquet, I imagine millions of dollars of deficit happily dancing around. . .”)
Facts about the Kinus
– It took 100,000 square yards of fabric to cover the ceiling of Pier 12
– There will be 4000 people attending the banquet on Sunday evening
– They only got final clearance three weeks before the Banquet (not easy for the caterers)
– They met with 40 members of the NYPD for security and crowd control issues
