Mesirus nefesh

You are giving up a body part of which you have two, and leaving yourself with only one. THAT is the mesirus nefesh, and I really doubt 17 ever really donated.

Past kidney donor

In my humble opinion, the whole procedure is overrated. I can only speak for myself and not other donors, but I had very minimal pain, and I was up and running 3 hours after surgery. I was left feeling after surgery, this is the whole ‘mesiras nefesh’,?! I think if people knew this, that in this day of minimally invasive laproscopic surgery, more people would consider donating. On the other hand I don’t want to make light of having surgery, speak to a doctor.

Be careful

1) Do doctors really perform transplant surgery on a 65 year old man? What quality of life will he have, and for how long, given the state of anti-rejection drugs today? If I chas vesholom needed one, I would not accept a transplant myself because of the low quality of life, and I am much younger than he is.

2) Not everyone can or should give a kidney. Chaya Lipschutz is a loose cannon who makes it sound as if giving a kidney is like giving blood. Remember, pikuach nefesh applies to yourself as well.

3) Yes, compensation is illegal.

Call Menachem friedman at RENEWAL. They are a very special organization. They helped our family find a donor for our daughter.

Pathetic

You will definitely need a blood test to see initially if you’re worth looking into, then they’re going to do all different types of tissue antigens tests to try and reduce his risk of rejection.

And I do think it is fair to ask about money. Usually living donors are ideally compensated for the work and time missed and for medical expenses. It is surgery after all…

To all of you:

Its currently illegal to pay for the harvesting of organs in the US. There are policy arguments to be made in favor and against organs for cash. But, for now if you do decide to sell your organs (or organs belonging to someone else for that matter), you may suffer the same fate as these rabbis.

I could tell you must be under age five 🙂

Amazing

It’s amazing how much work is being done by the frum velt for patients in need of a kidney. There is Renewal, Ms. Lipshuts and now Rabbi Lieder from Ahavas Chesed in Crown Heights is heavily involved as well. Kol hakavod to all.

I agree with you that if it’s what incentivizes a person to donate his kidney, better give him the money to save the life. If you are indeed that type of person, better to be discreet in the request and email the email address. It ought to bring shame upon the kidney peddler to write such a question publicly. If it was written in jest, it’s even more inappropriate to make light of a man’s suffering.

do u need a blood test to test if ur bloods a or o?

it's a valid question

The risk and pain and loss of work that come along with donating an organ are definitely worth some money.
You could probably get a nice amount if you donate it.
If that will be the thing that will get you to do it, go for it! You never know, you might be the best match.
