The chief scientist of the Israeli Education Ministry, Dr. Gavriel Avital, was dismissed on Monday after statements he had made, in which he questioned evolution.
Avital, a religious Jew who wears a Kippa, said in an interview that Darwinism should be analyzed critically along with biblical creationism, Ynetnews.com reported.
“There are those for whom evolution is a religion and are unwilling to hear about anything else,” he said. “Part of my responsibility, in light of my position with the Education Ministry, is to examine textbooks and curricula.
“If textbooks state explicitly that human beings’ origins are to be found with monkeys, I would want students to pursue and grapple with other opinions. There are many people who don’t believe the evolutionary account is correct.”
His comments sparked a public uproar, with many environmentalists and secular scholars calling for his dismissal.
Outraged no less is Rabbi Daniel Kaye, Mashgiach of Chabad’s Yeshiva Gedola in Sydney and a son-in-law of Dr. Michael Hasofer OBM, Emeritus Professor of Statistics at the University of New South Wales in Australia.
“It is an outrage and shocking news that of all places, only in Israel, the land of the Jews, is it forbidden to voice a dissenting view to popular science (which is very unscientific, more like science fiction),” Kaye wrote to COLlive.com.
Rabbi Kaye added that Avital’s opinion is “held by many top scientists in the world, who clearly see that science is no longer a contradiction to Judaism and the belief in a creator of heaven and earth.”
To prove his point, Kaye sent to the media a copy of a paper Professor A.M. Hasofer wrote in 1976, titled “A Statistician Looks at New-Darwinism” which was published in the B’Or Hatorah journal.

The simplist answer to all of this is that no scientist has ever used Darwins theory for scientific experimentation. Even Scientists will tell you that.

I would have fired him too. Why did he only question evolution? He should have outright rejected it. The Torah is true. Evolution is merely a flawed theory.
In effect, Schützenberger, author of “Algorithms and the Neo-Darwinian Theory of Evolution” in Mathematical Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Interpretation of Evolution , was arguing that the belief that chance alone could create a fully functioning eye from random proteins is about as likely, statistically, as lightning strikes on a junkyard somehow assembling, by accident, a fully functioning television set from random parts. (Mr. Berlinski believes that defenders of Darwinism who argue that crude natural selection could “engineer” such exquisitely intricate creations as the eye are covertly introducing “intelligent design” into their theory.)
