On Wednesday, Oct. 13th, at 12:30 p.m., Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski will begin his 18th year of teaching the Bible.
The Study Group started with 2 people eighteen years ago and has now grown into several groups with hundreds of participants. The class studies Torah verse by verse and discusses the literal meaning as well as the moral lessons and implication for our day and age.
“I had no idea where this would lead when we first began 18 years ago,” said Rabbi Moshe Bryski, the Executive Director of Chabad of the Conejo, “I am pleasantly surprised by the growth and interest these classes have generated.”
The weekly study group allows for discussion and questions. “My goal is to make the Torah a relevant guide to living life as a Jew. It is a gift from G-d and each of its words are sacred and full of meaning. The gift can only truly be appreciated if it’s unwrapped and studied.”
The Rabbi has compiled over 6,500 pages of notes and commentaries he has researched on the Torah. In eighteen years of study, the group has made it through the Book of Genesis and three-fourths of the way through the Book of Exodus.
“The joke around the study groups is the pace of the class,” said the Rabbi, “at the rate we are going; we figure we will complete all Five Books of the Torah by the year 2046. And then we’ll start over again.”
Many educators have joined the study groups to help them better understand the text of the Torah in order to teach their students the importance and meaning of each verse.
The Wednesday afternoon Study Group meets on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. at the Conejo Jewish Academy, 30345 Canwood Street in Agoura Hills. The study group this semester will be studying the portion of “Teruma – The Tabernacle and Its Vessels,” focusing on its structure, its role and meaning then and now, and why it was considered G-d’s home on earth.
There is no fee to attend the study group. A delicious lunch follows the one-hour class.
Additional study groups for the fall semester include classes on Chassidic Philosophy, Kabbalah and a women’s only study group. For further information on these and many other free learning opportunities, please call the Conejo Jewish Academy at 818-991-0991 or visit www.jewishacademy.com.
