The 71st Precinct Crime Prevention department has notified COLlive of stricter laws which will be enforced for jaywalking in Crown Heights.
Notices in English and Hebrew have been printed and will be distributed in the Brooklyn neighborhood warning locals and visitors that it is “against the law to cross any street except at marked crosswalks at each corner.”
In the past, many accidents have occurred due to pedestrians crossing in the middle of the street and not from street corners, especially on main thoroughfare Eastern Parkway near Lubavitch Headquarters 770.
Each Tishrei Crown Heights is flooded with young and old visitors from Israel, France, England, Australia and other locations around the world who come to spend the holidays ‘with the Rebbe.’
Officer Richard Silverstein of the 71st Precinct said that the precinct knows that every year there’s a large influx of visitors to the neighborhood, “who are not familiar with our rules of the road.”
“We want to make sure they know that what they are doing is dangerous to themselves and others,” he told COLlive.com.
“We want them to be aware that we will be enforcing the new rules with summons and possible arrests.”
In related news, Deputy Inspector Peter Simonetti, the Commanding Officer for the 71st Precinct, was promoted to full Inspector in a ceremony at 1 Police Plaza (1PP), headquarters of the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Oy Vey. No Oy J.
ומה עושים כבר למכוניות שלא עוצרות בcrosswalk?!!??
Crazy world!!!!!
this is a great thing for all you lazy people who can’t walk an extra few minutes!
How much is a Jay walking ticket?
I once asked a female cop in brooklyn and she didnt know. She said she never wrote a ticket for that.
We are examples to the kinderlach. If they watch us jaywalk, it’s an endorsement of the practice. YOU may be a #1 expert jaywalker — a world champion, even. But the CHILD who then goes ahead and copies the behavior you’ve just modeled, well, would you like that on YOUR cheshbon (that you influenced children to endanger themselves by jaywalking)? Quit your kvetching about walking a few extra steps and say a kapital tehillim while waiting a few extra minutes for the light to change. Buy a rolling cart if you can’t carry your purchases without jaywalking. But be a… Read more »
This is just a new scheme to steal our money. They will not go to Utica ave to ticket jay walkers, only on Kingston and EP. And they use the excuse that it’s for our safety.
Do you think nothing happens on a 1 way street?
If you come out from between 2 cars & someone driving doesn’t see you, are you in the right because it’s a 1-
way street?
Or how about the guy who is too lazy to drive around the block to get to the other end of the street, so he points his car in the right direction & backs up all the way down the street & doesn’t see you stepping out in front (oops, I meant in back) of his car?
They way it sounds its really looking at everyones safety with the use of a scare tactic. Large influx of visitors who are use to looking right as the cross the street should be aware they here in the US you have to look left before crossing the street. Let’s be safe and warn others about crossing the street. And i highly doubt any summons will be written
this is for our benefit not there’s
they are just trying to help US remember that
this is the biggest joke i ever heard they tried to enforce jay walking in manhattan way back never worked jay walking is part on new york life
they should barricade any entrance to the street on EPW between kingston and brooklyn and only allow pedestrians to cross on marked walk ways
A very small percentage of jay walkers are jews
ww.nbcnewyork.com/news/politics/Pedestrian-Study-Report-Says-New-York-Safer-100911929.html
ww.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/nyc_ped_safety_study_action_plan.pdf”
Only 20 percent of the pedestrians killed or seriously injured in New York last year were crossing against the light, compared to 27 percent who had waited for the walk signal, the study found”
the issue isnt crossing the issue is looking before you cross
what about the rest of the borough? crown heights is not the only place with jaywalkers. they should enforce it all over brooklyn and manhattan
in your dreams!! believe me, those who dont think this is a good idea are nuts. when you cross in the middle of quiet streets and nothing happens, you’ll think ‘hey, i’m careful, nothin’l happen to me’ and that leads to accidents.
Isn’t it a constitutional right to jaywalk in New York, or something?
so many accidents happened because bochurim and kids cross in the middle of the street – so dangerous and reckless!!
They should reinforce the laws for cars who stop in middle of a crosswalk.
I was just trying to cross with my kids and a stroller and the cars were all backed up, so they squished so close together that I was unable to cross and had to wait for the next light.
Anyways, I don’t think it’ll help. these foreigners are not afraid. They know that someone will bail them out an hour before shabbos, and they’ll become a public figure.
That is so riduculous when it comes to one-way streets that barely have traffic. So if I’m on kingston shopping, and I need to go across the street to another store, I need to walk all the way to the corner each time? And then back to my car again?! Eastern pkwy and empire I def agree with, bt quiet 1-way streets, are they going to start ticketing for that too?!
wana c that happening
Are they going to ticket on all streets or just Eastern Pkwy?
