When parents think about sending their kids to summer camp, Allston-Brighton is probably not the first place that comes to mind, but that perception is about to change.
Camp Gan Israel at the Shaloh House Jewish Day School on Chestnut Hill Avenue is about to become Allston-Brighton’s first camp nationally accredited by the American Camping Association.
“The ACA is the only national, third-party accreditation organization for camps to prove and to show parents that a camp is living up to the standards of safety, professionalism and excitement for their kids,” said camp director Rabbi Ilan Meyers.
Hundreds of Jewish children, age 3 to 12, attend the day camp that lasts for eight weeks every summer with plenty of fresh activities to keep kids busy, learning and having fun.
ACA officials visited the camp for the first time on Thursday, Aug 12.
Meyers said the camp performed perfectly on its inspection without a single standard missing or flawed. That means there are no obstacles left to prevent Camp Gan Israel from obtaining official ACA accreditation this October.
When that happens, Meyers said Camp Gan Israel will be the first Jewish day camp in the Boston area nationally accredited by the ACA. There are currently more than 2,400 ACA-accredited camps in the U.S. and 400 in New England.
Meyers is encouraging supporters of the camp and day school to vote for the Shaloh House on Facebook in Kohl’s $500,000 giveaway for 20 U.S. schools. Visit CGIBoston.org
