Mode Ani – one hand on the other - SICHA from Frierdiker Rebbe
August 25, 2010 5:23 am

RE. Mode Ani – one hand on the other The following is an excerpt from a Sicha from the FRIERDIKER REBBE (Sefer Hasichot 5709 page 330): Read more »

I authored comment # 16 and being that it generated interest I would like to add that I once discussed this with Reb Sholom Morozov A”H and he said that he wasn’t taught to do it as pictured nor did he know what ‘kaf al kaf’ meant.

Modeh Ani

I was taught the tips of the fingers should be touching the heart area, while the hands are touching each other, palm to palm, finger to finger. And the head should be tilted downwards towards the heart too.

so proud
August 25, 2010 1:20 am

so proud of the outcome of this disgusting and disgracing article. nothing like lubavitch- bringing kedusha and emes into every hole!!!!! the rebbe would be proud of this emese conversation. I heard of all the above mentioned options, and had different phases in life- according 2 what i heard last, but i still wonder every morning WHAT is the right way. there is a story with i thnk the friediker rebbe or one of the rabeim that his father told him 2 do it cuz his father and grandfather etc until moshe rabeinu did so, if anyone has it maybe… Read more »

Urgent

I think a Vaad HaRabannin B’inyanei Kaf al Kaf should immediately be established. This is definitely a burning issue.

Chassidus 101:
Hisbonenus

Meditation 101:
Hisbodedus.

Chassidus brings dveykus.
Hisbodedus brings “histalkus” from gashmiyus. Doesn’t necessarily lead anywhere.

LeInyan halacha: Suffice it to say that I would pasken that a shochet who does this should be summarily removed.

kaf al kaf
August 24, 2010 4:51 pm

this is an old question. one comment here mentioned what rabbi groner said about this. one needs to ask him if he heard this from the rebbe or that is how he understood it. the wording kaf al kaf perhaps doesn’t imply clasping the hands together, rather that the two palms and fingers are together – but that doesn’t mean upwards either. it could mean sideways with one hand on top of the other – kaf AL kaf. i don’t know, as a bochur i always did it sideways. my kids learn in school upwards. neither has a clear source.… Read more »

I would think that if putting your hands together meant clasping, they would have used a better hebrew term then Kaf al Kaf. oychez or some other word would be more appropriate.

rabbi goldstein sr. (i.e. uncle yossi) spoke about it on a living torah episode i believe. he said that we do do it in that (seemingly goyishe) position.

modeh ani
August 24, 2010 1:32 pm

from what ive seen around NO ONE knows exactly how to hold their hands during Modeh Ani. everyone knows that the hands should be together and head faced down but i have seen many many different “interpretations” on what it means to hold hands together. I personally asked R. Laibel Groner when he spoke in my school and he said to hold the hands together upright- yes in this seemingly goyishe position. In answer to that- “no tumah can affect the modeh ani of a yid.” (but i dont think thats an excuse to do it at other times) If… Read more »

I find it hard to believe that the Modeh Ani position is the same as the goishe position (as pictured). I believe it’s a misconception! None of the Eltere Chassidim I asked, remember such a pose from the Alter Heim. Perhaps, when it says ‘Kaf al Kaf’ it means a ‘clasped’ position (where only the palms are together; the fingers wrap around the back of the palm). While I can’t say for certain, but we all know how much we’re makpid not to kneel or keep our fingers crossed. I would appreciate any comments regarding this matter as it’s been… Read more »

Modeh Ani pose
August 24, 2010 9:31 am

When one says modeh ani one is specifically supposed to point one’s hands downward so as not to be doing it the non-Jewish way.

You and your pretty feet Mendy!
August 24, 2010 9:21 am

Nice way to get people to watch the Chabad Telethon promo!

Funny and cute as it is, this is a goyish pose and inappropiate to do, let alone advertise for the world.
