BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has scheduled a press event on Aug. 3 in New York, fuelling anticipation that it may unveil the much-anticipated BlackBerry 9800 slider phone.
BlackBerry 9800 is being touted as an iPhone rival BlackBerry 9800 is being touted as an iPhone rival, Co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie told analysts last month that RIM plans to introduce two devices around the end of the quarter.
Canada’s RIM, which is best known for handsets with a full QWERTY keyboard, has not yet been able to create a touch-screen device that can compete with Apple’s iPhone. The BlackBerry 9800 could prove the company’s critics wrong and win back market share from Apple.
BlackBerry 9800 is expected to become the first BlackBerry smartphone with a sliding keyboard as well as a touchscreen display. The handset would run under the new BlackBerry 6 operating system, which said to have been optimized for touchscreen displays and comes with a highly interactive interface. AT&T is rumored to be the carrier for the new BlackBerry device.
BlackBerry, the once sought after gadget, has been facing several challenges recently ranging from maintaining market share to handling regulatory issues.
BlackBerry still holds about 20 percent of the global smartphone market but is losing share to Apple’s iPhone and Android-based devices. Recently, Apple said that more than 80 percent of the Fortune 100 companies were testing or deploying its iPhone.
